Medical Fact of the Day

William Murphy was an American physician who worked with George Minot on the treatment of pernicious anaemia.  They showed that by feeding these unfortunate patients a diet of uncooked liver, they were able to overcome the effects of the anaemia.  These two were able to show that the anaemia had come about as the result of a deficiency of an unknown substance.  Later work showed that such anaemia may come about either through a lack of vitamin B12 in the diet or a failure to absorb vitamin B12.  In the case of many of the sufferers of pernicious anaemia, this was because of an absence of intrinsic factor in the stomach.  Murphy and Minot shared the 1934 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1934 with George Whipple, whose research they had built upon.  Murphy was born on this day in 1892.
